Cypark Resources Berhad, Malaysia’s leading integrated green engineering and renewable energy solutions provider, has engaged global certification expert TÜV SÜD as part of its plan to transform former Pajam dumpsite into Malaysia’s first and biggest renewable energy park. With TÜV SÜD’s testing support, the site which previously had minimal economic, real estate and social value, is now certified as a performance-ready solar park with the ability to power over 17,000 households annually.
The RM150 million park includes a 13MW lightweight, non-permanent and non-invasive solar park. In 21 years, the solar park will generate RM500 million worth of electricity, which is a three-time turnover. This amount of electricity is equivalent to electricity generated by 9,300 tonnes of coal, while potentially reducing 14,335 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 684 tonnes of methane gas emissions a year.
Managing a closed dump site is a 25-year process. During this period, Cypark, through a public-private partnership with the State Government, transformed the Pajam site into an integrated renewable energy park to return the land to the community in a form that benefits the environment and people. Dumpsites are important in developing economies. However, after close to 30 years of operations, the Pajam dumpsite may affect social and environmental well-being of nearby areas. Decomposing waste contains toxic substances and over time leaches into the soil and ground water, resulting in environmental and health hazards. It also releases greenhouse gases such as methane gas, which is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide in aggravating climate change. Considering the environmental, economic and social benefits from the transformation, the Pajam renewable energy park was selected as an “Entry Point Project” under Malaysia’s Economic Transformation Program.
“Unlike coal or natural gas, sunlight cannot be stored in containers. Thus, it is critical that our solar park is able to capture every hour of sunlight and convert it into solar energy. Under the Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreement, power producers are responsible for supplying reliable, steady flow of power. Faulty photovoltaic systems will cause costly disruptions. As such, we only use the highest quality photovoltaic modules and inverters. We commissioned TÜV SÜD to test grid safety and performance-readiness. We also depended on TÜV SÜD to test the efficacy of the power we generated,” said Mr. Daud Ahmad, Group Chief Executive Officer, Cypark Resources Berhad.
